Gray for the beautifully-designed webzine Popwreckoning. We wholeheartedly agree with the analysis of the term "indie rock".

"Remember when the term “indie rock” meant something? From Dischord Records bands like Rites of Spring and Fugazi to 1990s lo-fi staples like Pavement and Elliott Smith, indie rock used to mean that a band maintained a certain aesthetic of raw, do-it-yourself production, and it meant that they released their records on independent record labels. Remember that? Yeah, neither do I. I’m 27 years old. I was raised on Nirvana and Pearl Jam, bands who eschewed independent labels for gigantic mainstream success. Nowadays, indie rock is a blanket term that can be applied to any number of types of bands and genres of music. That being said, Untied States is an indie rock band to the core. They are signed to relatively unknown indie label Distile Records, and their sound harkens back to a laundry list of well-respected Dischord bands (among many other bands too numerous to list) yet they still cover enough new territory to sound fresh and exciting.... Read the full storyDistile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-73282069612109943492010-01-06T08:06:00.000-08:002010-01-06T08:25:42.472-08:00Planets will hit the road again this Spring<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 83px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmi41bYCLIXcr5Y9e-nU0sWXuiqDEX4BzhKQEhuus7BDE-LxLpmTwldGvWjLTFS-10s7vze32ABJ2da4jjnkyA9ReEZckgNcpNkjCC6KRA4Gv_4-cC1R8qhKqNbH0dKnMEPq3JJ02wsojb/s400/planets_logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423662669920033586" />

Mah rock duo Planets is in the process of booking a tour up and down the west coast with their friends SECONDARY + FRIENDSHIP & THE FAWN from up north for March 2010.

March 4 2010 @ Sub-Mission - SF, California
March 5 2010 @ TBA - Oakland, California
March 6, 2010 @ TBA - San Jose, California
March 7, 2010 @ TBA - San Luis Obispo, California
March 8 2010 @ Biko Garage - Isla Vista, California
March 9, 2010 @ The Smell - LA, California
March 10, 2010 @ TBA - San Diego, California
March 11, 2010 @ Trunk Space - Phoenix, Arizona
March 12, 2010 @ TBA - Tuscon, Arizona
March 13, 2010 @ TBA - San Diego, California
March 14, 2010 @ McWorld - LA, California
March 15, 2010 @ TBA - Santa Cruz, California
March 16, 2010 @ TBA - Berkeley, California
March17, 2010 @ TBA - Sacramento, California
March 18, 2010 @ TBA - Arcata, California
March 19, 2010 @ TBA - Portland, Oregon
March 2010 @ Healthy Times Fun Club - Seattle, Washington
March 2010 @ TBA Vancouver, British Columbia
March 22 2010 @ TBA - Bellingham, Washington
March 23, 2010 @ TBA - Seattle, Washington
March 25, 2010 @ TBA - Portland, Oregon
March 26, 2010 @ Rainshadow - Reno, Nevada

More info:
Planets - MyspaceDistile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-20975410140812355632010-01-06T06:00:00.000-08:002010-01-06T07:06:34.082-08:00The Phill(er): Holding Up Walls Podcasted

If you are looking for some tasty podcasts with a selection of great music, go check out The PhiLL(er)
This time, Phill Ramey chose the track "Holding Up Walls" from the new album by Untied States, "Instant Everything, Constant Nothing".

This is the New Song Daily #388: Untied States – “Holding Up Walls”

Keep track of The PhiLL(er) on Facebook and become a fan by clicking here.Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-32958363127540854022010-01-05T07:49:00.000-08:002010-01-06T06:56:09.579-08:00Untied States On The Cover of Performer MagazineWhat a great way to start the New Year!
Untied States is featured in the Perfomer Magazine January issue.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 310px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIVec1R4yHZ2KGCIq9H04fYlVsAQFCDmzfaKaYAJAIYXc8V19IaJ2wML2Jql23FOoIj0D3kaThPc8_drkilUI5MF4oD0-cZvXT5yN2xkDh6tE9DAiuhZCcxYTCPn8UDd3Uz-I_8f1NqtQo/s400/UntiedStates_PerformerMag_coverstory.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423640251539644002" />Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-52308281624564931062009-10-04T18:24:00.000-07:002010-01-05T07:54:20.442-08:00Get one!Hello folks!

Long time no talk! Taking direction from a torn up and oddly reassembled guide to songwriting, the group explores known terrain but takes wild paths to reach unpredictable, yet ultimately rewarding destinations. With a barrage of driving samples, interlaced melodic sheets of guitars, and just-enough disciplined noise, it all moves swiftly from elegant to disorienting, in an adventurous course that directs vocals that alternately veer between croon and squall. At the heart of it all lays a fundamental search to be “untied”- to say what hasn’t yet been said and the belief that there will always be new ways to say it.

On UNTIED STATES'forthcoming LP, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing, core songwriters Colin Arnstein and Skip Engelbrecht have reined in some of the eccentricities of their past albums only to spin out into brand new territories. The album exhibits a new sonic clarity and focus, courtesy of new member/engineer Darren Tablan, who brought the two out of the house and into a large-scale studio, exposing them to a new palette of sounds while providing a keen guidance to their onslaught of ideas. The contrast that once existed between their driving songs and out-there soundscapes has been replaced by a new fabric, where these very different sides of songwriting are now interwoven and overlaid instead of seamed together at their ends. New rhythm recruits- drummer Satchel Mallon (who appears on the record) and bassist Philip Frobos help to bring all of it to live audiences and undoubtedly to intriguing new places.

Explosion expected on September 2009.
Listen to: Bye Bye Bi-Polar
(from the upcoming LP "Instant Everything, Constant Nothing"
Reach Untied States at: www.myspace.com/untiedstates

--------------------------------

Rejoignez Untied States: www.myspace.com/untiedstatesDistile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-38733801358840594892009-06-07T10:15:00.001-07:002009-06-07T10:18:52.952-07:00Mimas & Papas European Tour!Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-59067023237923937092009-06-06T06:46:00.001-07:002009-06-06T06:46:42.665-07:00Hello Electric: DAY FOURDistile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-35422752751895797372009-05-17T03:23:00.000-07:002009-05-17T03:39:50.298-07:00Jeepster's first full lengh due June 22<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 282px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigArW9SZmqfmfl4K1qab6Y8GbCuvqgOooueARzvQNNwAfck0bmpgRLQ0Uo0M-TN9rzHSYlPKTmnur2h4q7Sbws-ZCVhH19qFKzMR8fgaEtlE1vuJz0CYvFHBb17IGJqGwTNDDJDVAnfafz/s320/COVER_AVANT_JEEPSTER.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336739465270059730" />

After ending O! the Joy, Goings and Marcelli moved to San Francisco, where they began jamming with Nevada City resident Jonah Wells, a singer. Tracks were laid down for the forthcoming release, "What if All the Rebels Died?" at a friend's empty cabin in the woods near Lake Tahoe.
The band, whose sound is reminiscent of late career Camper Van Beethoven and a decaffeinated Tom Waits, chose the location for its quiet surroundings and as inspiration. First french returns...Here are some very nice words from a couple of French webzines:

INDIE ROCK MAG: "Ecouter The Worries, le premier disque des Danois de Mimas, c’est un peu comme regarder couler un fleuve au lit accidenté : en surface tout paraît tranquille alors que l‘on sait que des choses bien plus confuses et brutales se trament en profondeur..." Read the full story

Read the full story

Read the full story

Read the full story

Read the full story

Download the mag

Read the full story

Download the mag

Read the full story

Read the full story

Read the full story

These blogs speak about Mimas too. Where are you from?

Mimas: We're from the future. No just kidding. We were formed in 1960 and then we broke up and reunited in 2004 with the name Mimas and Papas, but now we just like Mimas more. We live in the only country in Scandinavia where you can get seriously drunk without being the poorest person on earth the day after. Booze is cheap here!

Distile: Why are you named Mimas?

Mimas: We really think that most good artists start with a M. Megadeth, Madonna, George Michael.... So we were really sure about the M. Imas we came up with while playing squash. It's a mental conidtion.

Distile: How would you define you?

Mimas: If you would think of a mix between the old Take That and then take some of Ice Cubes solo stuff and put in a bit of the more melodic Norweigian Black Metal you would be completely off. We're just way more indie than that.

Distile: Your first album “The Worries” will be out soon on Distile Records. How is everything going so far?

Mimas: Well. Very well. All we ever wanted since we were small kids on the playground shitting our pants and eating dirt was to make music and play it for people.

Distile: Your record is already a success in the UK and you will tour Europe on June 2009. Are you planning to tour the US soon?

Mimas: World domination is on our to do list, so of course!

Website: MimasDistile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-47632817044454891302008-10-23T06:43:00.000-07:002008-10-23T07:05:30.364-07:00We announce!

Atlanta avant-rock combo Untied States will release their third full-length on Distile at the beginning of 2009. Untied States' electrifying experimental rock has already attracted attention from a number of influential tastemakers including Dusted, Popmatters, Smother, Tiny Mixtapes and Delusions of Adequacy. These masters of pop disaster will pull out a whole new assortment of tricks to bring us one of the most inspired records of the new year.
>>>Myspace

Listen to: Untied States - You Own Your Own (from Retail/Detail)

Danish band Mimas will be the second big surprise in store for Distile fans in 2009. The quartet's debut record, "The Worries", strikes the perfect balance between post rock atmosphere, pop melody, and jazzy freedom, all tied to a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic. Mimas have become prominent in the Danish and British indie-scene since the release of their EP “Hands will Carry” and have been recommended by Drowned in Sound, Rough Trade, Tasty Fanzine amongst others.
>>>Myspace

Listen to: Mimas - Cats On Fire (from The Worries)Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-71650138574479997232008-09-07T15:58:00.000-07:002008-09-08T06:01:23.429-07:00O! This is about to be one of the highlight of the end of this year. The release date is scheduled on December 8th.

To put it simply, O! The Joy’s Zen Mode has been one of the most stimulating listening for a while. Blending every possible musical genres, from prog' to math, from pop to experimental, from jazz to soul, from emo to noise, the album is multi-directionnal and unpredictable such that you could be lost and baffled while you are listening to it. Be warned.

O! The Joy was designed since their beginning to be the ground of experimentations. This is a free electrons band and a three strong-charactered musicians’ gathering, leading by the virtuoso drummer Justin Goings (Mister Metaphor, Playing To The Grandstand). Add an unconventionnal guitar player (Jason Ellis) and a slightly emo singer (Kurt Travis), and you will get the point! Zen Mode is a challenging and amazing masterpiece.

Listen to: Zen Mode Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4344482827616754878.post-55713429596856976752008-09-07T14:54:00.000-07:002008-09-08T05:39:17.706-07:00Norcal Math RockEverything you always wanted to know about math rock (but were afraid to ask). A muggy afternoon in Brooklyn. Paul parks his trailer next to the Galapagos Art Space. Tonight the show will be starting at midnight after a couple of crappy local bands. Planets is pretty lucky though, their tourmates Ahleuchatistas will be playing at 1 am...
A couple of hours to kill in this quiet neighborhood. An interview for a European TV broadcast called "Tracks". Conversations about music and politics, about the differences between the States and Europe, about the meaning of what it is to be an underground rock band today...

Thomas is rehearsing the battery in the van while Paul moves his 6 handmade speakers up to the stage and puts the finishing touches for the show. Now it's time to get dressed like ghosts. Now it's time to go fast and furious.

The show will be short and hectic. Songs following each other without a rest. A wall of sound and fury, a music mixed up with psychedelic images creating a new dimension in which you are entirely -physically and mentally- absorbed. When the show is finished, you need a few minutes to return to Earth. But you definitely want to buy another ticket.

Steps. One of the first bands that introduced us to this hectic scene was called Honey For Petzi. Mathy* as we like, here at Distile. And here’s a few more names: Shovel, Favez, Impure Whilelmina, Ventura, Knut...yeah, heavy rock for your I-pod-filled ears. Well I guess if you're browsing this blog, you're not too afraid of experiencing more breakthrough tunes. So let’s introduce you to Commodor.

Commodor is a trio from Geneva with Adriano Perlini (guitar, vocals), Tim Robert-Charrue (bass, keyboard) and Christophe Henchoz (percussion). If you have been educated at the Swiss school, you should know that Tim holds the 6-strings in Knut (Hydrahead Industries). That's the heavy element.
Thus, Commodor has a rich loud sound, yes. You can't deny their origin. They have the acrimonious and abrasive sound of their Swiss mates for sure. And since I’ve seen them live in first part of Trans Am, I can tell you that these guys are seriously busy on stage.

But Commodor also comes up with the vision of frontman Adriano Perlini and the background of jazz drummer Christophe Henchoz who set the band apart and pushed it in other directions than purely heavy. They bring the "post" and the "math" to the heavy part.
Kind of Girls Against Boys or These Arms Are Snake? Maybe.
Just check them out and stay tuned of their upcoming US Tour 2009.

Commodor - Driving Out Of Focus available in the United States of America on August 12th 2008 (Stickfigure).

*Assuming you're not afraid of this bad bad word.

MEDIA
Listen to: Commodor - Panavision
Distile Recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17143378871018846943noreply@blogger.com
